Evictions
Community collaborative installation, 2019
Evictions is a Lego city, built by the Edmonton community and spanning the entire floor of the John & Maggie Mitchell Art Gallery. As a part of the MAG Artist-in-Residence program, structures are designed and built by members of the community on a drop-in basis as the sites for their bad memories to be evicted into. Individuals can come and build their structures -- whatever type of structure is necessary for the memory in mind -- and can place it where it is best suited along the floor of the Mitchell Art Gallery, knowing that their memory is safely confined within its walls, and that they may walk away emotionally lighter. By the end of the residency, Evictions is a city of outcast memories, and their previous hosts, the designers of the city, have been freed.
